Ernesto Picenoni

Stone sculpture exhibition

Ernesto Picenoni (1939–2024) was a self-taught artist from Bregaglia. He was very talented at drawing and, over time, developed into a skilled sculptor thanks to his work as a bricklayer and sacristan at the church in Bondo. Initially, he made gravestones on commission. In 1982, he created animal sculptures for the PrimExpo trade fair in Lugano. In 2002, he took part in the 18th edition of the International Nativity Scene Exhibition in Verona, where he exhibited his figures, almost all of which were made from stone from Pontresina. In 2015, he presented the works ‘Al tröp e al tröp pööch’ as part of the C4 in Chiavenna.

In summer, his pictures can be viewed in Donato Salis' Osteria in Bondo.

His sculptures can also be admired in the cellar of the ‘Capolago Promontogno’ house at Via Principale 16 in Promontogno.

Opening hours
The cellar is open every Wednesday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Guided tours with explanations in Italian or German are available. No registration is required. Admission is free. Maximum 10 people per tour. Tip: Bring a jacket – it's quite cold in the cellar.

Villa Garbald

On the main street of Castasegna stands the enchanting Villa Garbald built between 1863 and 1864 based on the project of the famous architect Gottfried Semper (1803-1879) and completed in 2004 with the addition of the «Roccolo» tower by Miller&Maranta.

Art in Villa Garbald

The establishment of the Villa Garbald seminar centre in 2004 also marked the beginning of a partnership with the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur. Since 2005, "art facilities" have contributed to the charisma of Villa Garbald as an art venue. The current concept is to attract contemporary artists for specific projects and to strengthen Villa Garbald as a place for the exploration of photography. Each year, an artist is commissioned to develop their own photographic project for Gottfried Semper's Villa Garbald and Miller&Maranta's Roccolo, integrating their own work into the overall context in a specific way. The art facility can be visited by appointment or as part of a public guided tour. Small accompanying publications explain the concept and introduce the work of the respective artist. They are handed out to visitors free of charge at Villa Garbald.

Kulturhotel Corona

Since 2022, Hotel Corona has organized cultural trips to the Bregaglia Valley several times a year in collaboration with the NZZ. Guests can take part in professional writing and photography courses, enjoy jazz-related experiences, and attend lectures about the Giacometti family of painters, in close partnership with the Giacometti Center.

In the restaurant, where Giovanni Segantini and Alberto Giacometti used to dine, even other hotel guests can enjoy the special atmosphere. Even today, with a bit of luck, you might still encounter a descendant of the two artist families there.

Gallery Palazzo Salis

Toni Weishaupt

Before settling in Soglio, he visited the mountain cantons of Switzerland, living in each one for eight months. Living there allowed him to get to know the local people and to intensively experience his favourite subjects: mountains, landscapes, flowers, everyday scenes linked to tradition.

With his exhibition, now Tony Weishaupt has found his home in Soglio. At Palazzo Salis, the works merge in a unique symbiosis with the traditional building and the oil paintings. Discover the new gallery through the eyes of the painter.

Location
Palazzo Salis barn in Soglio (left towards the garden)

Opening hours
All year round, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., if necessary contact (in German) the artist on WhatsApp (+41 79 563 02 61)
