Ski Touring
For the adventurous
Val Bregaglia is an attractive and varied area for ski touring. Apart from the ski circus, many untouched peaks around Maloja, in the Forno Valley, towards Avers or Bivio are waiting to be explored. Between the summits you’ll find exciting tours: whether for an afternoon or several days, there is something for every snow enthusiast. Especially experienced back country skiers will get their effort's worth!
Multi-day ski mountaineering tours
The Forno Hut is an ideal starting point for all those who want to spend several days on the road. From the last week of February until the beginning of May, the wardens are present; before and after that, a winter room is available to all visitors. Every overnight stay requires a reservation by phone or e-mail, +41 81 824 31 82 | This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. On the hut website you will find many descriptions with maps compiled by the hut wardens Alena and Beat Kühnis.
The Albigna hut is closed in winter, but offers a spacious winter room for up to 14 people. The bedroom is equipped with duvets; in the kitchen-living room you can cook and heat with a wood stove. On the website there is a small list of worthwhile tours, often in combination with the Forno Valley.
Daily ski mountaineering tours
Without overnight stays, beautiful but also challenging summit tours are recommended directly from Maloja, for example to Piz Lunghin or Piz de la Margna. Those who do not dare to reach the peak can also discover Val Fedoz on a more leisurely tour; it separates Bregaglia from the Upper Engadine.
In good snow conditions, the village of Bivio on the Julier Pass can be reached from Casaccia via Val Maroz and the Septimer Pass. This tour can be extended at your discretion: A two-day tour leads from Bivio to the Lunghinpass (and Piz). The rapid and steep descent to Maloja, with its wonderful views of the entire Upper Engadine, rewards all the effort of the ascent and leads back to the Val Bregaglia. If you only have one day, you can also start from Bivio and choose the route directly to Maloja or to Casaccia. On both routes, ski tourers can enjoy a "gift" of uphill vertical metres, as two T-bar lifts from Bivio take you up about 800 vertical metres of ascent. Two summit tours can also be started in Casaccia Piz Cam and Piz Duan .
Since the landslide on Piz Cengalo, the entire Val Bondasca has been closed. The Sciora hut is closed. In the Capanna Sasc Furä a small winter room for 4 persons is available for emergencies.
For every ski tour it is essential to have functional equipment suitable for winter use, careful preparation and, above all, to study the daily avalanche bulletin and the guidelines for wildlife rest areas.
