Villa Garbald

On the main street of Castasegna is the enchanting Villa Garbald

The young Garbald couple commissioned the famous architect and professor at the Zürich Polytechnic, Gottfried Semper (1803-1879), to build their villa. Mr. Garbald was a customs' officer and Mrs. Garbald was a young author. The three-story house stands out architecturally, but still blends in well with its surroundings.

Built in the style of a Lombardy country house, it is the only structure built by Semper south of the Alps. Surprisingly, the architect never visited Bregaglia. The wonderful gardens and the terrace with pergola give the Villa a southern flair. Today, the Garbald Foundation is responsible for the operation and maintenance of this cultural jewel. The Villa was expanded and renovated in collaboration with ETH Zürich. Since 2004, the Villa has been used for scientific, business and cultural seminars and retreats. The Villa has guided tours.

The Villa Garbald is managed by the Garbald Foundation. In 2004, in collaboration with the ETH Zurich, the Villa with its wonderful flowering garden, was the subject of a careful architectural restoration. Inspired by the hunting towers known as "Roccolo," a modern residential tower was built in the garden. The villa Garbald and the tower can be used as a center for seminars, and cultural or scientific events.
