A Race of artists
The Giacometti family of Stampa, which has lived in Val Bregaglia for several
centuries, represents a great artistic tradition. Giovanni Giacometti was a painter
who loved the landscapes of Bregaglia. Some of his paintings are exhibited in
the Ciäsa Granda Valley Museum in Stampa. His cousin, Augusto Giacometti,
worked as a painter in Switzerland, Florence, Paris, and in the United States.
His favorite subjects were flowers, still-life, interiors, and the picturesque
landscapes of Val Bregaglia. He also painted abstract compositions of colors without
shapes. Many important churches and public buildings in Switzerland contain his
magnificent stained-glass windows. Alberto Giacometti, a sculptor and the son
of Giovanni Giacometti, carried on the artistic tradition of the family.
He worked in Paris for many years and in 1964 he received the Guggenheim prize
in the United States, the highest artistic honor in America. The graves of these
artists are located in the cemetery of the quaint little Church of San Giorgio
(St. George) in Borgonovo.
