Stampa

Stampa Stampa 1019 m.a.s.l.

The municipality of Stampa comprises the small villages of Borgonovo, Coltura and Montaccio, as well as the holiday resort of Maloja. Even today many villagers in this area lead a somewhat nomadic life. Once or twice a year, entire families leave these tiny villages and return to Stampa and the larger towns near Maloja.

Stampa is the native village of the world-famous Giacometti artists, Augusto, Giovanni, and his son Alberto. Their graves are in the peaceful cemetery of the Church of San Giorgio (St. George) in Borgonovo. Works by Augusto Giacometti can be admired in the churches of San Giorgio in Borgonovo and San Pietro (St. Peter) near Coltura. The valley museum, the “Ciäsa Granda,” houses a special exhibit in the Giacometti-Varlin Room of magnificent paintings and sculptures by Giovanni, Alberto, and Augusto Giacometti. The “Ciäsa Granda” is an old patrician mansion, dating back to 1581. The Cultural Society of Bregaglia has dedicated many years of time and effort to transform it not only into a museum, but also into the cultural center of the valley. Seldom will you have the opportunity to visit such a fine collection of rare stones and gems, as well as an outstanding exhibition of a wide variety of both the valley’s fauna and flora, exhibited with very detailed real-life backgrounds.

Other attractions in Stampa are an old Roman grave carved in granite, near Palü, and the home of the Castelmur family, the “Palazzo Castelmur,” in Coltura, which is now a museum that is open to the public from June through October.
